Not ready to take on the full 290km challenge of Marcher Castles Way? Discover our 97km taster loop - an unforgettable journey through history and stunning landscapes, perfect for those seeking a shorter, yet equally captivating adventure

Marcher Castles Way taster loop, like the full route, begins in historic Shrewsbury, where the cobbled streets create an enchanting atmosphere. The route winds through serene country lanes and scenic off-road trails, passing Wroxeter and Ironbridge. Riders will then tackle the legendary Wenlock Edge, enjoying stunning views from Much Wenlock that sweep across both Wales and England.

After passing the village of Rushbury, instead of veering left to follow the full Marcher Castles Way route towards Broadstone, you'll continue straight ahead toward the small village of Ticklerton. From there, you'll reconnect with the main route at Church Stretton, where the stunning landscapes will guide you back to Shrewsbury, completing your adventure-filled 97km taster loop.

Top tips

  • Ride responsibly: Show respect for all other users and take care of the environment
  • Leave no trace: Practice low impact cycling. Don’t skid, follow existing paths, ride through puddles rather than widening tracks and avoid muddy trails where possible. Never leave litter and clear up rubbish from other users too.
  • Control your bike: Stay focused, check your speed and think about other people.
  • Avoid disturbing animals: Farm pet and wild animals can all be startled by sudden noise. Always be considerate, give them a wide berth and leave gates as you find them.
  • Plan ahead: Know your bike, your equipment, your ability and be aware of the terrain you’re riding on. Be prepared for severe weather and potential mechanical issues.
  • Always give way: Let people know you’re coming with a bell, whistle or cheery hello. Pass wide and slow particularly with horse riders. Approach blind corners and descents carefully. Be Nice, Say Hi!
