Matthew’s journey to independence: Rediscovering cycling with the Inclusive Cycling Experience

Matthew, wearing a bright green jacket and helmet, stands with his e-bike on a peaceful, tree-lined path, surrounded by lush greenery.
Matthew hadn’t ridden a large-wheeled bike since an incident in 2021. A training session with the Inclusive Cycling Experience in Greater Manchester brought him a sense of renewed confidence and joy

When Matthew arrived at the session in Hyde Park, Hyde, with a desire to try a larger two-wheeled bike after only riding his BMX, he was excited but a little uncertain. After an initial consultation with Cycling UK delivery officers Ryan and Simon, the team decided to start him on a trike to ensure he felt stable and in control.

Gradually, as he advanced through the activities, Matthew’s confidence grew, and he was soon comfortably riding around the area. His enthusiasm was so evident that he even began helping other participants who were less confident.

Matthew’s mum, who was there to support him, noticed a marked improvement in both his skills and self-assurance compared to previous cycling activities.

Following this session, Matthew took the opportunity to borrow an e-bike for a two-week loan and embraced the experience fully, riding every day with his family and covering more miles than he had since his incident in 2021.

The impact was so positive that he now hopes to volunteer at future sessions, eager to help others discover the benefits of cycling as he has.

In Matthew’s words:

This was my first time on an e-bike and the first time since my accident that I’d been on a large-wheeled bike. I’d been attending another cycling project in Manchester and riding trikes, and although I’d managed my BMX, I didn’t feel confident on a larger bike. Ryan and Simon were fantastic – they let me try a range of e-bikes before moving onto the two-wheeler.
Once I got comfortable, I borrowed the e-bike for two weeks and rode every day with my parents on off-road tracks. I covered more miles than I have in years, and it’s given me back my independence. I’m now saving up to buy my own e-bike.
When I came back, I was thrilled to join in again and help demonstrate for new participants. I’d love to continue assisting at these sessions because this experience has shown me that I can get back to cycling the way I used to before my accident – something I never thought possible

Matthew’s story demonstrates the transformative effect of the Inclusive Cycling Experience in Greater Manchester. His progress and commitment to support others are a testament to the programme’s impact on personal independence and confidence.
