Wold Newton 8th September 2024

Tim having just returned from the club’s ‘Autumn Camp’ in Beccles where he enjoyed a taste of the ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ awoke to thick fog and drizzly rain. Maybe his luck had changed as there was a ‘Yellow’ weather warning out for torrential downpours and thunderstorms. In the end, skies miraculously brightened up just before 09.30 am with warm sunshine beating down by 11 am.

 

Meeting up with Tim Newbery at Louth’s Leisure Centre were Martin Wood, John Rickett, Steve Croton and Ty Harness. Ty is our newest full member so welcome aboard Ty. Apologies had been sent by Chris Owen, Rob Cook and Alan Hockham who’d be watching the ‘Tour of Britain’ in Beccles.

Pedalling off towards the Covenham’s before ascending the Wolds to Boswell Road via North Ormsby, patches of blue sky knitted together with the sun now beating down. We were doubly rewarded with fine views of the Lincolnshire Wolds and patchwork quilt of golden fields, some still to be harvested, all the way to Salters’ Lane and Brats Lane. A number of cycle groups were seen heading towards the Village Hall at Wold Newton, including members of Lindsey Roads CC. We hoped they’d leave us some cake.

 

In the end, on arrival we found there to be bountiful supplies. A truly large array of fine-looking cakes, quiche and scones. What a choice. We were advised by the good folk serving us that they’d be open all of next week end as it’s the Lincolnshire Wolds and Coast Churches Festival, in addition to the Bike Ride and Stride on the Saturday. All Saints Church lies opposite.

 

On departure one more hill to climb, Hawerby Top with Ty recounting the history of Hawerby Hall. Crossing over Barton Street it’s always an enjoyable run through the Grainsby Estate. Nearing Tetney Lock skies briefly darkened and a scattering of showers made us think of donning waterproofs but these quickly cleared away. A decision therefore to continue to Appleby’s Ice Cream Parlour in Conisholme.

 

A good decision as it turned out with temperatures soaring to 22 Degrees Celsius in brilliant sunshine encouraging a few of us to enjoy an ice cream. Ty wins the prize with his multi scoop ice cream cone which looked delicious.

 

Arrived back into Louth by 2 pm having covered 40 miles. Many thanks to John for a final cup of coffee at the Leisure Centre whilst we discussed next Wednesday’s ride. Looks like Maltby le Marsh. Details to follow.
