WEDNESDAY 26th October 2022 - WEDNESDAY WANDER TO ALFORD

Considering it was near Halloween, the forecast of dry sunny conditions and a top temperature of nearly 20 Degrees Celsius seemed perfect. However, there was additionally a strong southerly wind with gusts predicted to be as high as 30-35 mph.

Never the less it was good to see Tim Newbery, Reg Bagshaw and Paul Linder turn up at Louth's Meridian Leisure Centre eager for the midweek ride.

A fine run into the brisk wind through Little Cawthorpe and Muckton with, as always, the reward of splendid views across the Great Eau Valley to the middle marsh. It was good to see the chalk river at Belleau Bridge flowing so freely after months of drought.

WEDNESDAY WANDER TO ALFORD

The name of the village was originally derived from 'Helgi's meadow' ( ló Old Norse - glade/meadow) but changed to Bellowe from 1536 when French became fashionable (Fr Belle + Eau - Beautiful Water) and is taken from the spring of the rivulet Eau which rises there.

Here we would meet up with Alan Hockham and we would continue along LCC's Cycle Route C4 to Tothby, the track worthy of the 'Rough Stuff Fellowship'.

Welcome refreshments were enjoyed at the 'Tea Room' at Alford Manor House which was open for the school half term.

Paul would head for home at this point with Alan also departing near Woodthorpe. That left Tim and Reg to continue along the pleasant rural lanes through Authorpe and the Carltons.

Van and car drivers were considerate and courteous with one driver alerting us to recently shredded hawthorn hedges and debris strewn across the road. An unscheduled stop near Manby Crossroads resulted in a pleasant walk of a few hundred metres for Reg to get home again. The car drivers warning was apposite.

Arrived back in Louth with the sun still shining down having covered about 34 miles. Thanks to all for the company.
