Cycle Access Fund impact

The Cycle Access Fund is designed to support those least likely to have access to a bike, helping to reduce health and income inequalities while creating safer, more pleasant communities by decreasing short car journeys.

The Cycle Access Fund offers grants across four strands: individual bike ownership, shared-use cycles, bike recycling, and repairs. These provide affordable and accessible cycling opportunities while allowing organisations to apply for multiple strands, enhancing the programme's flexibility and impact.

Evolution of the Cycle Access Fund

The fund combines the best elements of two earlier initiatives to maximise its impact:

  • Access Bikes, launched in 2021, provided affordable bikes to low-income individuals and later offered grants to community organisations for bike purchases.
  • The Cycle Share Fund, introduced in 2023, facilitated shared-use cycles, allowing more people to experience cycling without owning a bike.

In 2024, these initiatives were unified under the Cycle Access Fund, streamlining efforts to provide grants for individual ownership, shared-use cycles, recycling, and repairs. By addressing barriers to cycling through different strands, the fund helps more people across Scotland access and enjoy cycling.
