Cycling UK’s impact in East Lothian

Cycling UK is dedicated to making cycling accessible, enjoyable and inclusive for everyone in East Lothian

Over the years, Cycling UK has supported East Lothian communities with programmes like Health Revolutions, which encouraged residents to embrace cycling for better physical and mental wellbeing.

At our recent showcase event in Dunbar, we welcomed former participants, now active members of the Stepping Out group, who continue to experience the positive impact of cycling.

It was inspiring to see how these early initiatives have blossomed into lasting, community-led engagement, now supported by our current projects, including Connecting Communities and In-Tandem East Lothian (ITEL).

Our projects aim to create happier, healthier and greener lives by providing opportunities for everyone to embrace cycling, regardless of experience or ability. The Dunbar event demonstrated the transformative effect of our initiatives, empowering people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy the freedom and connection that cycling can offer.

The day featured a range of activities, from guided rides to inclusive cycling demonstrations, and the official launch of ITEL. Attendees also enjoyed a networking lunch, where they heard from active travel partners, project leaders and local participants about the meaningful changes Cycling UK’s initiatives have brought to East Lothian.

Cycling UK’s work in East Lothian is made possible through the support of SEStran, whose funding has been crucial in expanding these projects and connecting more people to the joys of cycling.

Highlights of Cycling UK projects in East Lothian

Connecting Communities

Launched in 2024-25, Connecting Communities is a flagship project designed to encourage active travel through cycling in East Lothian. In just the first few months, the programme has delivered more than 60 cycling activities, engaging over 300 participants.

With cycle loans, try-out sessions and confidence-building initiatives, Connecting Communities is helping residents view cycling as a viable mode of transport for local journeys.

Case study – Nikki’s journey:

Nikki, a participant in the programme, was keen to try cycling for family journeys. With the support of a Cycling UK development officer, she borrowed an e-bike and trailer to explore cycling with her young daughter.

My daughter loves going to nursery in the trailer, and all her friends want a go. It’s been a game-changer for us, and we might not have thought to try a trailer without this opportunity

Case study – Lynda’s story:

Inspired by her child’s positive experience with Play Together on Pedals, Lynda decided to learn to cycle herself. With support from a development officer, she developed her cycling skills, moving from balancing to pedalling. Now, her entire family enjoys cycling together.

It’s made a huge difference. I never thought I’d learn to ride at my age. The support has been fantastic, and cycling has given us a new family activity outdoors

Cycle Access Fund (CAF)

The Cycle Access Fund (CAF) combines the best elements of two previous initiatives – Access Bikes and the Cycle Share Fund – to maximise its impact. Access Bikes, which began in 2021, provided affordable bikes to individuals on low incomes, later expanding to offer grants to community organisations for purchasing bikes.

The Cycle Share Fund, introduced in 2023, focused on shared-use cycles, including e-bikes and adaptive bikes, to allow more people to experience cycling without the financial burden of ownership.

CAF, launched in 2024, streamlines these initiatives by offering grants for individual bike ownership, shared-use cycles and bike repairs, making cycling more accessible for a broader audience.

Access Bikes in East Lothian (2023-24):

  • £42,000 awarded across three local organisations, supporting both individual bike ownership and non-standard cycles for shared community use

[The] bikes have been a fantastic addition to our fleet and are greatly appreciated by those making use of them. We’ve received lots of positive comments and interest

Play Together on Pedals (PTOP)

Play Together on Pedals (PTOP) is an inclusive early years cycling programme that introduces children and families to cycling through fun, safe and engaging sessions.

During the showcase event, guests had the chance to observe a PTOP session in action, witnessing firsthand how this initiative fosters a love of cycling among young children and equips them with valuable skills for a lifetime of riding.

In-Tandem East Lothian (ITEL)

ITEL was founded by Shona Black, who, inspired by her experiences with VIE Velo in Edinburgh, wanted to make tandem cycling accessible to individuals in East Lothian who require extra support to ride.

With essential backing from Beyond Boundaries East Lothian (BBEL), which provided tandem bikes and storage space, ITEL has been able to launch and offer this unique cycling experience locally.

BBEL’s support has been crucial in establishing the project, which eliminates the need for locals to travel to Edinburgh and enables participants to enjoy the benefits of tandem cycling within their own community.

I am so proud of what we have achieved with VIE Velo and how we have progressed. It all started with a conversation in the RNIB cafe and with some help from Cycling UK look at us now! I decided to create In-Tandem East Lothian as I live in the area and while I really enjoy riding with VIE Velo, I find travelling into Edinburgh for rides a long trip especially when there is so much fantastic cycling on my doorstep.

In-Tandem is for anyone who needs support to ride due to a disability. So many disabled people face barriers to accessing exercise and many experience social isolation, low confidence, and/or depression. Getting out into the outdoors with like-minded people and enjoying a chat while exercising can make a huge difference
