Chelmsford Gets Cycling

Ride to Writtle, Chelmsford
Following the great success of last year’s led cycle rides, a series of recreational rides have been organised for Chelmsford throughout the summer

The rides, led by experienced ride leaders, will follow many of the quiet traffic-free routes around the city. The emphasis is on fun and the rides are open to everyone. The group usually stops for a relaxed coffee and there's always time to chat while cycling.

The cycle rides start with nice, short routes lasting 45 minutes and they progress at the riders' pace. Children are welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent and be able to cycle comfortably for up to an hour. Parents with trailers or bike seats can bring younger children along.

These led cycle rides form part of the Council’s commitment to promoting healthier and more active lives. We are keen to encourage our community to improve their health, well-being and quality of life, while also having fun and making new friends.”

Councillor Ray Ride, Chelmsford City Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services

Rides will take place from Riverside Ice & Leisure Centre every Thursday from 10am and every Saturday from 2pm. Thursday rides are now up and running and Saturday rides start from 11 May. The first one (on that date only) will leave from Chelmsford High Street.

There will be a launch event on Saturday 11 May from 11am to 3pm in Chelmsford High Street where people can:

  • Take their bikes to get them checked and roadworthy
  • Find out more about the led cycle ride programme
  • Learn about a series of training courses for complete beginners who want to learn to ride again or for those who want a bit more confidence on the road
  • Find out how to get trained up and volunteer as a ride leader.

The first Saturday ride will leave the High Street at 2pm and head off along cycle paths towards Writtle.

These rides have been organised and co-ordinated by CTC, with the support of Chelmsford City Council and Essex County Council.
