About us
DORSET CYCLISTS’ NETWORK
Campaigning for a cycle friendly Dorset
DCN was formed in 1992 to provide a voice for cyclists and to promote cycling as a healthy, environmentally-friendly and convenient means of transport.
We are not a cycling club but a campaign run by elected volunteers covering the whole of Dorset including Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
We are a consultation group used by local authorities on cycling proposals and we work with them. We lobby the councils to improve cycle facilities, especially on behalf of people who cycle to school, work and to the shops.
We work with other organisations with compatible aims.
We help to identify cyclists’ needs such as safer junctions, secure parking, better signs etc.
A network of local area representatives lobby on local issues and organise local rides.
We organise gentle and moderate cycle rides and other events, on which ride leaders are covered for 3rd party insurance through Cycling UK, to which we are affiliated.
Members are kept informed through emails and online.
Currently there is no membership fee.

Organisation
DCN represents cyclists in Dorset, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. Contact the DCN Secretary or any Coordinator DCN for advice about starting a local group.
The Committee is elected by the annual general meeting. It decides
overall policy and deals with finance, news and publicity.
Each branch is autonomous and campaigns in its own way according to local conditions and needs while working within the DCN Constitution
Every branch is entitled to be represented on the committee.
Committee members and branch coordinators are unpaid. They can claim out-of-pocket expenses.
Benefits of membership
Representation
As an individual or family member of DCN you can help to influence policy on cycling by taking an active part in your local DCN branch or setting one up in an area which isn’t currently represented or by contacting your local Coordinator on a specific problem. You also have a vote in DCN elections at the annual meeting.
Cycle Rides
There are some regular rides taking place. Please see the Rides section on this page.
Information
Emails keep you informed of local and wider cycling news.
Membership of CyclingUK
DCN is affiliated to CyclingUK. This enables individual DCN members to obtain the affiliated individual membership at a reduced rate. The main benefit is 3rd party insurance cover for any cycling you do (whether with DCN or by yourself). Whilst this gives you some of the advantages of a full member of CUK, there are some offers missing. If you are interested in the affiliated membership, please contact the DCN membership secretary for further details.
