Wednesday Wander to Rand
Cycling UK Louth 'Wednesday Wander' to Rand.
Chris Owen was today's Ride Leader and the assembled group consisting of Reg Bagshaw, John Ambler and Tim Newbery departed Market Rasen Leisure Centre a little after 10 am.
On leaving Middle Rasen behind, quiet rural lanes allowed us to wend our way through Lissington and Wickenby. Chris would point out the farmland former member David Russel now owns.
Arriving at Thorne's (Beehives) of Rand in increasingly sunny conditions, we had the canteen almost to ourselves. Scones for Reg and bacon sandwiches for John which were highly rated. Good value too.
Chris led a different route back, this time through Snelland and Snarford (originally named 'Snortr's Ford' after Viking settlers). Here, there's a fascinating 14th Century church of St. Lawrence with its famous six pillar tomb of the St. Paull family.
Although the once magnificent 17th Century Hall and gardens have long since crumbled away, it was a peaceful and picture perfect spot to mend Reg's puncture. Great team work!
Back to the Leisure Centre around 2 pm having completed about 24 miles. Perfect weather with clear blue skies and temperatures a pleasant 23 degrees. Thanks to Chris for leading and to all for a great ride.
