Wednesday Wander to Mablethorpe
Wednesday Wander to Mablethorpe
15th June 2022
The most promising weather forecast for days, if not weeks! Just in time for our ride to the seaside.
Meeting up at Louth's Meridian Leisure Centre were Tim Newbery, Alan Hockham and Rob Cook. Apologies had been sent from Chris Owen who would be leading a ride himself.
Largely sunny conditions and light winds buoyed our spirits as we headed to South Cockerington (formerly Cockerington St Leonard), sited next to the River Cocker so hence it's name.
A steady right hand curve would then lead us to 'Three Bridges' before travelling coastbound to Gayton Engine. Alan remarked that after a period of neglect, the grounds of the pumping station had been spruced up, perhaps in readiness for an open day later in the year.
For a change, we would now pass-by the former railway station at Theddlethorpe before tackling the green lane cycle trail along Crook Bank. Strange to see the gas terminal demolished.
Emerging at Stone Bridge it was a short spin along the sea front to Coral Cafe for well earned refreshments. The beach looked clean and well maintained and the sea (almost) inviting. Chris perhaps would have waded into the waters. A gentle easterly 'sea breeze' had developed but it was still very pleasant sitting on the promenade.
Tim surprisingly didn't indulge in an ice cream but would wait until he returned home, the fridge having been stockpiled high.
Our return route would take us along the Main Street to Thorp before utilising the network of tranquil marsh lanes through Hagnaby and Beesby. All too soon arriving at Claythorpe Water Mill where, after final refreshments (and scoops of ice cream for Paul) the riders departed on their respective routes home.
Close to 35 miles for the Louth contingent. Temperatures by now 23 degrees Celsius.
