Cycling UK Louth Sunday 5th January 2025:
With yellow weather warnings for snow, ice and freezing rain over the Lincolnshire Wolds, the scheduled ride to Hornacastle defaulted to our winter ride to Woody’s at Woodthorpe - which would remain in a warning free zone!
Rain was falling steadily up until 10 am and with grey leaden skies, it was hardly an incentive to go out for a pleasurable spin on the bike. The very latest weather radar did however indicate an easing of the rain shortly after 10 am, although the predicted high of 9 Degrees Celsius wasn’t expected until late evening. Until then a chilly day was in prospect.
Ty Harness was first to assemble at the Leisure Centre with Tim Newbery arriving shortly after to determine if there was any interest. Ty’s enthusiasm finally persuaded Tim to at least head towards Woody’s with an option of turning back for an early bath.
With both of us dressed like Michelin Men to keep us toasty warm, we would in the end continue through Stewton and head to North Reston with Ty requesting a visit of The Church of Saint Edith. Dating to the 11th Century it was largely restored in 1868 and is now closed as a parish church and in private hands.
The good folk at Woody’s were surprised to see two cyclists turn up, Tim too was surprised he’d made it that far. Sitting next to warm radiators, hot mugs of coffee were consumed along with toast and bacon sandwiches.
The weather on return was much kinder with a back wind and just patchy slight rain and drizzle. Temperatures by now up to 4 degrees. Out route would take us to Claythorpe Mill and then to follow the ‘Top Road’ to Muckton and Little Cawthorpe. Not another cyclist to be seen all day.
Arrived back into Louth shortly before 1 pm having covered about 25 miles.
