Cycling UK Louth Wednesday Wander to Mablethorpe 5th March 2025
Following a request from Steve Croton, today's Wednesday Wander would be to the Blitz Tea Room at Mablethorpe. Unusually, it would be the fourth consecutive dry and sunny day with above average temperatures. The down side would be a steady sou’wester averaging 20 mph (30 kph) gusting 30 mph (50 kph).
Meeting up at Louth’s Meridian Leisure Centre were Tim Newbery, Ty Harness, Paul Linder and John Rickett. Departing at 10 am we’d head off to Stewton and Legbourne Furze but following advice from Jason Bartup of a sink hole near Gayton Top we’d follow the A157 through South Reston to Withern. Here we’d find Steve waiting for us as pre-planned.
The back wind allowed Paul, John and Steve to make rapid progress along Stain Lane which follows the course of the Great Eau and its tributaries to Stain Bridge. By Stone Bridge, we’d now encounter a cross wind all the way into town but reached The Blitz Tea Rooms a little ahead of schedule.
Quirky certainly, but great entertainment listening to Vera Lynn singing ‘We’ll Meet Again’ and Flanagan and Allen singing the classic ‘We're Gonna Hang Out The Washing On The Siegfried Line’. Very good value fayre too although not quite at 1940’s prices.
Paul, Steve and Ty would depart their separate ways from here to allow Tim and John a brief glimpse of the seaside.
The pullover had been teeming with visitors on Sunday watching the sand racing, but today all quiet in spite of the increasingly warm sunshine.
Tim having missed visiting the old railway station in Theddlethorpe All Saints last time, John took the lead directing Tim to Station Road. Interesting to compare today’s view with the old postcard.
Continuing across the Great Eau at High Bridge, it was good to have spotted Little Egret along the banks to Three Bridges. This small white heron first appeared in Great Britain in 1989 and it's great to have this species as a resident in Lincolnshire. Maybe we’ll soon see Spoonbill which currently is a rare breeder on the coasts of East Anglia.
With John continuing to lead back to Louth affording Tim some shelter, we arrived back at the Leisure Centre about 1.30 pm. Temperatures well above average at 15 Degrees Celsius. 33 miles covered by the Louth contingent.
