Chapel Saint Leonards 23-03-2025
Cycling UK Louth Sunday Ride to Chapel Saint Leonards 23rd March 2025.
Meeting up with today’s Ride Leader Tim Newbery at Louth’s Leisure Centre were Sven Livesey, John Rickett, Ty Harness, Paul Linder and Alan Hockham. Apologies had been sent by Martin, Chris, Steve and Paul.
Although not as sunny as last Wednesday, skies were bright and we ended up having sunny periods all day long. Top temperatures were forecast to reach the seasonal average of 10 Degrees Celsius although a brisk Nor’easter (gusting 25 mph) made it feel a little chilly. Not surprising as sea temperatures off the coast at Chapel Saint Leonards are currently only 7 Degrees.
The last time the club had ridden to the Garden Centre at Chapel was back in February 2024 and Sven reminded Tim that he still remembers the strong homebound headwind. Similar perhaps to what we’d have to contend with today! ETA back to Louth about 3 pm.
With a helpful wind, good progress was made as we passed by Maltby Wood, Haugham Wood and Burwell Wood, delineating the boundary of the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Great too to see such an abundance of daffodils, now that the snowdrops have largely died back. Our county has much to offer.
A short break to catch our breath in Alford before continuing through historic Willoughby and along the quiet lanes of Cycle Route C4 to Sloothby. Arriving at the Garden Centre at 11.45 am, we were just in time to find plenty of space before the Sunday Lunch crowd descended on the venue.
Early records of Chapel Saint Leonards date back to the Domesday Book of 1086, which recorded the village as "Leovarden". At that time, it was a small hamlet with a population of just 10 people. In its early days it shared the parish with Mumby Chapel whose church was dedicated to the Frankish Saint Leonard. Mumby Chapel no longer exists as it was swept into the sea in violent storms in 1570.
Following refreshment at the Garden Centre, the return would require much more effort into the increasingly blustery conditions. Tim had requested a short break at Woody’s Bar and Restaurant at Woodthorpe and although Alan had by now departed for home, Paul decided to join the Louth bound contingent and a pleasant chat ensued over hot and cold drinks. Wednesday’s ride seems to have been sorted out at least.
Arrived back at the Leisure Centre at 3.10 pm having covered 45 miles. Sven’s new 38 mm Marathon Plus tyres seemed to have worked well and look ideal for Norfolk’s ‘Rebellion Way’ in April.
Many thanks to all for the company.
