Nikiaisha Thompson
A committee member for Brixton BMX Club since 2019 looking after safeguarding, Nikiaisha Thompson set up women and girls sessions at the club.
Nikiaisha Thompson said…
"Being one of five siblings, cycling was one of the most affordable sports my parents encouraged. My father would collect bike frames from scrap piles around London, fix them up and we would ride in our local parks.
"When my son was four years old, he tried out BMXing at his local BMX track. Through circumstances, I paused his BMXing, he went back to it at the age of 10 years old.
"I become a committee member at Brixton BMX Club in 2019, and initiated the women and girls session with the support of the committee. Silvi Vargas, our only female coach has made the W&Gs into a success.
"We have a lot of work to do to promote female cycling, but we continue to work hard to promote female cycling."
Nominated by…
Nikiaisha was nominated for the 100 Women in Cycling by Aisha Lawal, who said:
"Nikaisha is inspiring because of her work ethic. She works tirelessly amongst a cluster of South London BMX Clubs to try and make positive changes. Working in a very male dominated environment Nikaisha works hard to breakdown the barriers to female inclusion in the sport of BMX, showcasing that there is a space for girls too.
She understands the gender imbalance in cycling and does her very best to try and tackle this and create more female inclusive spaces in cycling
Aisha Lawal
"Some of her recent achievements include the development of women and girls race sessions at Brixton BMX Club. Sessions have been a huge success and have been able to attract women and girls of all ages. Those involved have now developed a new passion for cycling and BMX thanks to the opportunities being made available.
"Nikaisha is driving forces ahead at some of the other clubs she is involved in (Peckham BMX Club and Merton Saints BMX Club) to give even more girls further opportunities. Whilst Nikaisha is not directly involved in the delivery of activities, she works very hard in the background to make things possible. She understands the gender imbalance in cycling and does her very best to try and tackle this and create more female inclusive spaces in cycling."
