“Growing up, my earliest memories involved my need for speed on anything with wheels! I would whizz around on my go-kart, skateboard, roller skates and bike with endless energy, going up and down the hill near my house. The grass stains, bruises and thick scabs on my knees never put me off!
“My mum doesn't drive, so we rode to primary school every day. Cutting through the back alleys, the woods and across the park field. A couple of miles felt epic and exciting to little me. Autumn was the best, rustling through leaves and splashing through puddles was so much fun!
“When I got older, I was allowed to explore further afield, out for hours learning about my surroundings, enjoying the freedom of being able to go anywhere, I never got bored!
In sixth form everyone was obsessed with learning to drive, but I didn't feel the need or understand why when my bike was so free and easy

“Throughout high school, sixth form and college, I rode my bike in all weathers while most got the bus. In sixth form everyone was obsessed with learning to drive, but I didn't feel the need or understand why when my bike was so free and easy.
“At university, my bike became not just a means of transport but a way to socialise and make new friends. I came out of my shell, finally I found people like me at Critical Mass, alleycats, bike polo and races. I got myself a bike trailer and even moved houses a few times, involving many heavy trips! I felt invincible, there was nothing I couldn’t do by bike!
Pedalling towards a new future
“About six years ago, I realised that despite my education and my career that I worked hard for. I wanted a change, in something that I have always been passionate about and wanted to encourage others to do.
“So, I decided as a New Year's resolution to leave my job and pursue becoming a cycle instructor. I applied for a six-month contract delivering Bikeability in schools. I did not have the right qualification yet and I was the only one to ride to the interview in the rain, but amazingly I got the job!
“Since then, I have been freelance and have worked for various cycle companies, in many cycle related roles, gaining experience and qualifications. In my free time I like to develop my mountain biking skills on my local trails and on camping trips abroad.
“Last year I took the plunge and set up my own business, ‘Bike With Emma’. I felt all my bike life experiences prepared me to succeed.
“Despite all my experience the one thing that I found I excelled at was teaching people how to ride bikes in a short space of time. All ages and abilities, including those with special educational needs.
I love the challenge and the smile they get when they are riding all by themselves for the first time, it’s an absolute buzz!

“I offer them belief when they don’t have any, I break the process down into little chunks so they can build their own confidence and it’s not scary. I love the challenge and the smile they get when they are riding all by themselves for the first time, it’s an absolute buzz!
“I registered as a Bikeability provider, so I can offer private lessons to those that may have missed out at school, are older or prefer to learn one to one.
“My aim is to change people’s lives for the better, in fitness, mental wellbeing and their environmental impact, by riding bikes.
“I am really happy and so proud of what I do.
“Everyone should ride bicycles!”
