After meeting her husband, a keen cyclist, Allana wondered what she was missing. Since she started cycling she has participated in numerous cycling events to raise money for charity and was instrumental in setting up a bike library to enable women and others to also give cycling a go.
Allana Hughes said…
“Cycling became a part of my life when I met my husband 15 years ago. He was a keen cyclist so I started to wonder about what I was missing out on.
“It started with going out on cycles together, but then as we had kids the passion grew and in the last few years it has become a big part of my life.
“Activities have included taking part in organised events (Tour de Borders and my biggest challenge the 100 mile route of Ride London) to raise money for causes close to my heart, building up my confidence to take part in cyclocross races, supporting my son’s junior bike club and working with others to set up the Grangemouth Bike Library and the delivery of a bike pump track facility as part of the Zetland Park Project in Grangemouth.

“Cycling has offered me so many opportunities, not only has it improved my health, it has provided me with an opportunity to make a difference in my community through raising money and raising the profile of causes close to my heart but it has also encouraged me to help others access cycling for their own benefit.”
Nominated by…
Allana was nominated for the 100 Women in Cycling by Jessica Paterson who said:
“Allana had the vision for a Bike Library in Zetland Park, Grangemouth, where she is running a Lottery-funded regeneration project.
“Although strictly speaking it was out of her remit because it wasn't part of the Lottery project, she volunteered her own time to get it up and running and showed real determination to overcome hurdles of budget and logistics (the library was funded by Cycling Scotland's Cycle Friendly Communities fund).
“Allana then worked very hard on social media in her own time to get the word out about the library. Within three weeks all the women's bikes in the library were booked out and a waiting list had to be introduced.
“She is also very active in the local junior bike club attended by her son, as well as being an inspirational Breeze ride leader.
“She completed a 100-mile sponsored bike ride in 2019 to raise funds for a disabled accessible roundabout for Zetland Park, and just generally lives and breathes cycling!"
