Mae seiclo’n ffordd wych o ddarganfod lle ac i ddod â threftadaeth a hanes lleol yn fyw. What is Tales of the Trails about?

Cycling UK will be listening to people who have a story to tell about where they live, and talking to the community about how they connect those stories to the paths and trails. We will record the stories, plot the cycling routes, and create interactive maps and videos which tell the Tales of the Trails. 

We will also be offering training and support to the communities to enable them to share the stories and ride the trails; whether that is ride leader training, basic maintenance, or setting up a community club - we’ll work together to overcome barriers and enable more people to explore their local heritage by bike.

We plan to hold community events to showcase the Tales of the Trails, and we’ll share more details when coronavirus restrictions allow.

Why are we doing this?

The valleys are rich in heritage. There are stories worth sharing, and enthusiastic storytellers living and working in beautiful countryside with great cycling opportunities.

Tales of the Trails will increase opportunities for local people to explore their local area, and will encourage more visitors to access heritage and trails. 

Over the last year, many of us have been exploring our local areas and discovering paths and local history that may previously have passed us by. This project will enable the communities to help more of their friends, neighbours, and visitors to explore the outdoors where they live, and to ensure that the rich local heritage is shared, the history not forgotten. 

Who are we working with?

Cycling UK is pleased to be working on this Heritage Lottery Project with two vibrant and connected community organisations: the Ynysybwl Regeneration Partnership and the Cambrian Village Trust.

Ynysybwl Regeneration Partnership amongst other things, oversee the Big Lottery, Create Your Space funded project - Vision for the Valley, and work in partnership with community members and groups, representatives of which make up the Vision Steering Group. This includes the Paths and Trails group with representation from Aberdare Cycle Club, Ynysybwl Pony Club, Daerwynno Outdoor Activity Centre, Clydach Ramblers and the Roberttown Runners.

The Paths and Trails group is working to link existing rights of way to provide new trails in St Gwynno’s forestry, with the aim of increasing use of the forestry and attracting visitors to the area. This has included the development of an off-road cycle route within the forest. Sustrans route 47 links Ynysybwl village to the forest and the proposed new cycle trail, taking in landscapes and landmarks that are inextricably linked to the history and heritage of Ynysbwl – such as the old Lady Windsor Colliery site, pilgrim trails, farmsteads, and St Gwynno’s church.

Also, as part of their Vision for the Valley project, they are looking to promote Ynysybwl as a destination for visitors from outside the area, enhancing the local economy. Tales of the Trails will support the vision to further promote the paths and trails in and around the village, enabling more people to access them, particularly by cycle.

The Cambrian Village Trust, based in Clydach Vale in the heart of the Cambrian Countryside Park, aim to connect people with each other and their heritage in the unique surroundings, through cycling and other outdoor activities. Their outdoor activity coordinator works in innovative ways to enable a diverse range of people to experience the benefits of being outside, especially in the Cambrian Countryside Park. There is an accessible cycling path around the lower lake in the park, and the higher lakes lead to the mountains and the potential for more off road exploration.

The community is rich with history, and with people wanting to share those stories and bring them to life today. It is a short ride from the Cambrian Country Park to the ‘Mid’ where Tom Williams of Trehafod, the Welsh Quarter Mile Cycling Champion in 1904, rode the cycle track, and where Kier Hardy spoke to the striking miners. The Countryside Park is home to the memorial to the mining disasters that occurred in the Cambrian colliery. The miners from the colliery played an integral part in the Tonypandy riots. Tales of the Trails will work with the Trust to bring these stories of the community to life and enable those who live and visit the area to explore the heritage by bike.  

How will we gather the stories, plan the routes, and bring the Tales of the Trails to life?

Following meetings held before Christmas to start the project off, we had planned to be out and about meeting with people, talking face to face and riding the routes, but given the current lockdown we will have to start here – online.  

We hope that before too long we can work with people in real life but in the meantime, if you have a story that you would like to share, a local trail that you ride and think that more people should know about, or an idea about how the communities of Clydach Vale and Ynysybwl can attract more visitors by bike then please let us know.

Beth yw nod Hanesion y Llwybrau?

Bydd Cycling UK yn gwrando ar bobl sydd â stori i’w hadrodd am y man lle maen nhw’n byw, ac yn siarad â’r gymuned am sut maen nhw’n cysylltu’r storïau hynny gyda’r llwybrau. Byddwn yn cofnodi’r storïau, yn plotio’r llwybrau seiclo ac yn creu mapiau rhyngweithiol a fideos sy’n adrodd Hanesion y Llwybrau.

Byddwn hefyd yn cynnig hyfforddiant a chymorth i’r cymunedau i’w galluogi i rannu’r storïau ac i deithio’r llwybrau; boed hyfforddiant arweinydd seiclo, gwaith cynnal a chadw sylfaenol neu sefydlu clwb cymunedol, byddwn yn gweithio gyda’n gilydd i oresgyn rhwystrau ac i alluogi mwy o bobl i ddysgu am eu treftadaeth leol ar gefn beic.

Ein bwriad yw cynnal digwyddiadau cymunedol i arddangos Hanesion y Llwybrau. Byddwn yn rhannu mwy o fanylion pan fydd cyfyngiadau Covid-19 yn caniatáu hynny.

Pam ydyn ni’n gwneud hyn?  

Mae gan y Cymoedd dreftadaeth gyfoethog. Mae yna storïau gwerth eu rhannu a storïwyr brwd sy’n byw ac yn gweithio mewn ardaloedd gwledig hardd gyda chyfleoedd gwych i seiclo.

Bydd Hanesion y Llwybrau’n cynyddu cyfleoedd i bobl leol grwydro eu hardal leol ac yn annog mwy o ymwelwyr i fanteisio ar y dreftadaeth a’r llwybrau.

Yn ystod y flwyddyn ddiwethaf, mae llawer ohonom wedi bod yn crwydro ein hardaloedd lleol ac yn darganfod llwybrau a hanes lleol nad oeddem wedi sylwi arnyn nhw ynghynt. Bydd y prosiect hwn yn galluogi’r cymunedau i helpu mwy o’u ffrindiau, cymdogion ac ymwelwyr i fynd i’r awyr agored lle maen nhw’n byw ac i sicrhau y caiff y dreftadaeth gyfoethog leol ei rhannu ac na fydd yr hanes yn mynd yn angof.

Pwy ydyn ni’n gweithio gyda nhw?

Mae Cycling UK yn falch o weithio ar y Prosiect Treftadaeth Loteri hwn gyda dau sefydliad cymunedol bywiog a chysylltiedig, sef Partneriaeth Adfywio Ynys-y-bwl ac Ymddiriedolaeth Pentref Cambrian.

Ymysg pethau eraill, mae Partneriaeth Adfywio Ynys-y-bwl yn goruchwylio’r prosiect Gweledigaeth ar gyfer y Cwm, a ariennir gan gronfa Crëwch eich Man y Loteri Fawr. Mae hefyd yn gweithio mewn partneriaeth ag aelodau o’r gymuned a grwpiau cymunedol, a chynrychiolwyr o’r rhain sy’n ffurfio Grŵp Llywio’r Weledigaeth. Mae hyn yn cynnwys y grŵp Llwybrau,  sydd â chynrychiolwyr o Grŵp Seiclo Aberdâr, Clwb Merlod Ynys-y-bwl, Canolfan Gweithgareddau Awyr Agored Daerwynno, Cerddwyr Clydach a chlwb rhedeg Roberttown Runners.

Mae’r grŵp Llwybrau’n gweithio i gysylltu hawliau tramwy sy’n bodoli eisoes er mwyn darparu llwybrau newydd yng nghoedwig Sant Gwynno gyda’r nod o gynyddu’r defnydd o’r goedwig a denu ymwelwyr i’r ardal. Mae hyn wedi cynnwys datblygu llwybr seiclo oddi ar y ffordd yn y goedwig. Mae llwybr 47 Sustrans yn cysylltu pentref Ynys-y-bwl â’r goedwig a’r llwybr seiclo arfaethedig newydd, gan gynnwys tirweddau a thirnodau sydd â chysylltiadau annatod â hanes a threftadaeth Ynys-y-bwl - fel hen safle glofa Lady Windsor, llwybrau pererinion, ffermydd ac eglwys Sant Gwynno. 

Hefyd fel rhan o’r prosiect  Gweledigaeth ar gyfer y Cwm, man nhw’n edrych ar hyrwyddo Ynys-y-bwl fel cyrchfan i ymwelwyr o’r tu allan i’r ardal, gan wella’r economi leol. Bydd Hanesion y Llwybrau’n cefnogi’r weledigaeth i hyrwyddo ymhellach y llwybrau yn y pentref a’i gyffiniau, gan alluogi mwy o bobl i fanteisio arnynt, ar gefn beic yn arbennig.

Nod Ymddiriedolaeth Pentref Cambrian, a leolir yng Nghwm Clydach yng nghanol Parc Gwledig Cambrian, yw cysylltu pobl â’i gilydd ac â’u treftadaeth yn y cyffiniau unigryw, trwy seiclo a gweithgareddau awyr agored eraill. Mae ei Chydgysylltydd Gweithgareddau Awyr Agored yn defnyddio dulliau arloesol i alluogi amrywiaeth o bobl wahanol i brofi buddion bod yn yr awyr agored, yn enwedig ym Mharc Gwledig Cambrian. Mae yna lwybr seiclo hygyrch o amgylch y llyn isaf yn y parc ac mae’r llynnoedd uchaf yn arwain at y mynyddoedd a’r posibilrwydd o grwydro mwy oddi ar y ffordd.

Mae gan y gymuned hanes cyfoethog ac mae’r bobl eisiau rhannu’r storïau hynny a dod â nhw’n fyw heddiw. Mae’n daith fer o Barc Gwledig Cambrian i’r ‘Mid’ lle roedd Tom Williams o Drehafod, Pencampwr Seiclo Chwarter Milltir Cymru yn 1904, yn seiclo ar y trac, a lle anerchodd Kier Hardie y glowyr oedd ar streic. Y Parc Gwledig yw cartref y gofeb i’r trychinebau a ddigwyddodd yng nglofa'r Cambrian. Chwaraeodd y glowyr o’r lofa ran annatod yn nherfysgoedd Tonypandy. Bydd Hanesion y Llwybrau yn gweithio gyda’r Ymddiriedolaeth i ddod â storïau’r gymuned yn fyw ac i alluogi’r bobl sy’n byw yn yr ardal ac yn ymweld â hi i ddysgu am y dreftadaeth ar gefn beic.  

Sut fyddwn ni’n casglu’r storïau, yn cynllunio’r llwybrau ac yn dod â Hanesion y Llwybrau yn fyw?  

Yn dilyn rhai cyfarfodydd a gynhaliwyd cyn y Nadolig i ddechrau’r prosiect, roeddem wedi bwriadu mynd ar hyd y lle i gyfarfod  â phobl, gan siarad wyneb yn wyneb a seiclo ar hyd y llwybrau, ond oherwydd y cyfyngiadau presennol ar symud, rhaid inni ddechrau yma – ar-lein.

Gobeithiwn y byddwn cyn bo hir yn gallu gweithio gyda phobl mewn bywyd go iawn. Yn y cyfamser, os oes gennych stori yr hoffech ei rhannu, llwybr lleol rydych chi’n seiclo ar hyd-ddo ac y credwch y dylai mwy o bobl wybod amdano, neu syniad ynghylch sut y gall cymunedau Cwm Clydach ac Ynys-y-bwl ddenu mwy o ymwelwyr ar feiciau, rhowch wybod inni.
