Review: Hornit AIRO 12" Balance Bike

A little boy is riding the Hornit AIRO Balance Bike, a yellow balance bike. He's wearing a helmet and he's in a garden

Your child’s first bike is an important milestone! Senior marketing and communications project officer Martin Hofschroer and his little one tested out this impressive balance bike from Hornit

Choosing the right balance bike can be a daunting task, especially when you need something that your child will love riding, but that’s also light enough for you to carry when they inevitably abandon it for the playground.

With a four-year gap between my children, it had been a while since I last ventured into the world of balance bikes. Thankfully, the Hornit AIRO 12" Balance Bike made that journey much easier. Here’s why it stands out.

Ultra-lightweight yet durable

Weighing just 2.95kg, the AIRO is impressively lightweight, making it easy for young children to handle on their own – and crucially, it won’t leave you with aching arms after carrying it around all afternoon.

The magnesium alloy frame, unlike the plastic often used in other lightweight bikes, provides both a feather-light feel and exceptional durability. It’s sturdy enough to withstand the inevitable bumps and scrapes of everyday use.

Sleek and safe design

The AIRO not only performs well but also looks fantastic. The grip-taped footrests are seamlessly integrated into the frame, ensuring comfort during freewheeling.

The air-filled tyres offer a smoother ride compared to plastic alternatives, and the padded stem provides an extra layer of safety. Fully safety tested and CE approved for children aged 18 months and up, the AIRO offers peace of mind for parents.

The Hornit AIRO Balance Bike in yellow

Available in six vibrant colours – flamingo pink, magma red, orca white, Tuvalu turquoise, iguana green and hammer yellow (our choice) – there’s a shade to match every child’s personality.

These bold, eye-catching colours not only look great but also enhance visibility, providing extra safety when your child is navigating a skate park alongside older boarders and scooter riders.

Hassle-free assembly and adjustability

As someone who once accidentally assembled a bike with the seat upside down (much to my neighbour’s amusement), I appreciated how straightforward the AIRO is to put together. With just three bolts to tighten (four if you adjust the seat), your child will be ready to ride in minutes.

The adjustable seat is another fantastic feature, accommodating children with an inside leg measurement of 30cm to 46cm, ensuring the bike grows with your child.

Verdict

The Hornit AIRO 12" Balance Bike is an outstanding choice, perfectly balancing lightweight design, durability and style. It’s easy to see why it’s considered one of the best kids’ balance bikes on the market.

Whether for its sleek design, ease of assembly or the lifetime warranty, the AIRO is a purchase you won’t regret. Your child will love riding it, and they’ll look great doing so.
