Here are some top tips to ensure your first bike touring and bikepacking experience is memorable and enjoyable

Embarking on your first bike touring or bikepacking adventure is an exciting experience. The thrill of exploring new terrains, the sense of freedom, and the connection with nature make these activities increasingly popular. Whether you're planning a weekend trip or a long-distance journey, proper preparation is key.

Choose the right bike and gear

Bike selection

Selecting the right bike is important. For touring, a touring bike with a sturdy frame, wider tires, and the ability to mount racks and panniers is ideal. For bikepacking, a mountain bike or gravel bike often works best due to their versatility and ability to handle rough terrain. That being said, most bikes/the bike you own can be used for touring and bikepacking, you don't necessarily need a specific bike.

Make sure your bike is comfortable, fits you well, and is in good working condition to avoid discomfort and injuries.

Essential gear

Invest in quality gear. A comfortable saddle, durable panniers or bikepacking bags, a reliable tent, sleeping bag, and a portable stove are essential items. Lightweight, packable clothing and gear will make your journey more comfortable.

Plan your route

Research and maps

Research your route thoroughly. Start with a manageable route, taking into consideration things such as distance, elevation, and terrain to match your fitness level and experience. Also take into consideration how you will get to the start and finish, and where along the route you can make a safe exit in case of an emergency.

Use maps, forums and apps like Komoot, Strava or our own journey planner to research routes that offer scenic views, bike-friendly paths, safe roads with minimal traffic and camping or lodging options.

Weather and terrain

Check the weather forecast and be prepared for changes. Understand the terrain you will be riding on - whether it's paved roads, gravel paths, or mountainous trails. This will help you pack appropriate gear and plan your daily mileage.

Pack wisely

The key to packing for bike touring or bikepacking is to bring only what you need. Prioritise lightweight, multi-functional items. Remember, every extra pound counts when you're pedalling for hours. Organise your gear for easy access and balance the weight evenly on your bike.

Essential items include:

  • Clothing: Quick-drying, moisture-wicking layers, and appropriate outerwear for varying weather conditions.
  • Shelter: A lightweight tent or bivy sack for camping, or a hammock if the terrain allows.
  • Sleeping Gear: A compact sleeping bag and sleeping pad.
  • Cooking Equipment: A small stove, fuel, a lightweight pot, and essential utensils.
  • Repair Kit: A multi-tool, bike repair tools, spare tubes, patch kit, and a pump.
  • Safety: First aid kit
  • Navigation:  A GPS device or a smartphone with offline maps

Before embarking on your trip, get comfortable with carrying all your gear. Go on shorter rides with a fully loaded bike to understand how it handles and to identify any potential issues.

Training and fitness

Build endurance

Start training well in advance. Gradually increase your mileage and carry some weight on your bike to simulate touring conditions. Aim to build your endurance and get accustomed to riding consecutive days.

Strength and flexibility

Incorporate strength and flexibility exercises into your routine. Strong legs, core, and back muscles will help you handle long rides and heavy loads. Stretching regularly can prevent injuries and improve comfort.

Stay hydrated and nourished

Staying hydrated and properly nourished is important for a successful and enjoyable bikepacking or bike touring adventure.

Being hydrated will help you maintain your energy levels, prevent fatigue and keep your body functioning at its peak level, especially during long rides and in different weather conditions.

Just as important is maintaining a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates, proteins and fats to keep you fuelled and aid recovery.

When heading out pack a mix of easily accessible snacks like nuts, energy bars and dried fruits. It's also important to plan regular meal stops to keep your energy up and avoid hitting a wall while cycling. Staying well-hydrated and properly nourished will not only improve your performance but also ensures you enjoy every mile of your journey.

Know some basic bike maintenance

Knowing some basic bike maintenance is essential for any bikepacking or bike touring adventure. Understanding how to fix common issues such as a flat tire, a broken chain or misaligned brakes can save you from being stranded in remote areas without help.

It's also worth remembering that regular maintenance of your bike, such as cleaning and lubricating the chain, checking tire pressure and inspecting brake pads, will mean your bike operates smoothly and reduces the risk of breakdowns while out on your bikepacking or bike touring ride.

Carrying a basic toolkit/multi-tool and spare parts, and having the knowledge to use them, will improve your safety and confidence on the road. By mastering basic bike maintenance, you not only prolong the life of your bike but also ensure a smoother and more enjoyable journey.

Leave no trace

Leaving no trace when bikepacking or bike touring is vital for maintaining the natural beauty and health of the environment.

This important principle means minimising your impact while riding and camping. This is done by packing up all your rubbish, avoiding disturbing wildlife and sticking to established trails and campsites. Proper disposal of your rubbish helps prevent pollution and keeps the surroundings pristine for other adventurers and local wildlife.

Following this rule of leaving no trace not only protects nature but also ensures these beautiful landscapes remain accessible and enjoyable for everyone, including future generations.

Stay flexible

It's important to remember that things don't always go as planned, and that's okay. Weather, road conditions and other unforeseen circumstances can affect your journey. However, if you stay flexible and are ready to adjust your plans as needed these unexpected changes will become easier to deal with. Learn to embrace the unexpected and view challenges as part of the adventure.

Go and explore

Bike touring and bikepacking are incredible ways to explore the world and connect with nature. With careful preparation, the right gear and a positive attitude, your first adventure can be an unforgettable experience!
