Cycling UK, the national cycling charity, recognised Mick Buckley as the winner of the Individual Achievement of the Year award at the 2017 Cycling UK Volunteers of the Year Awards.

Mick Buckley’s support for Ribbleton Bike Revival has amounted to over 2,300 unpaid hours of volunteering over two and a half years – in other words, Mick has given roughly 280 full eight hour days of work to the project.

Ribbleton Bike Revival, Preston, offers cycle maintenance sessions throughout the working week, as well as bike swaps and drop in facilities. Mick and his co-volunteer Franc Ashcroft are committed to helping those who benefit from the sessions, including those with mental health problems and disadvantaged young people, to learn new skills and tackle loneliness through social inclusion. Mick works constantly to engage with the local youth, helping them develop their capabilities and potential by teaching them basic skills in bicycle repair and upkeep through expert demonstrations and top cycling tips.

The project doesn’t own a dedicated vehicle to pick up and deliver donated and fixed bicycles so Mick offers his own car to the project for frequent use. Franc adds: “Mick is one volunteer who deserves recognition. It goes without saying that his role is absolutely pivotal to the smooth running of this project. We’re really pleased with the win – Mick works hard and he deserves it.”

The winners of the Cycling UK Volunteers of the Year were announced at the charity’s third annual conference. Cycling UK welcomed over 90 supporters and members, who took part in lively discussions and Q&A sessions with a variety of speakers including figureheads from the international stage through to inspiring local community club cyclists. Guests included former cycling world champion Chris Boardman MBE, recently appointed as Greater Manchester Cycling and Walking Commissioner, who presented the awards to the winners.

Cycling UK’s Chief Executive Paul Tuohy said: “Mick’s commitment and engagement with the local community, and the work he has enabled Ribbleton Bike Revival to carry out for the local community is inspiring. Not only does he tirelessly support the work of the project but goes above and beyond by consistently taking the time to complete repair work at home, and teach local young people – Cycling UK is proud to recognise Mick’s efforts.”
