Bank Holiday Sunday 26th May 2024

Cycling UK Louth Bank Holiday Sunday - 26th May 2024
The weather forecast had indicated some poor cycling conditions with rain being replaced by heavy downpours or even thunderstorms. Understandably, apologies had been received from Chris Owen, Alan Hockham and Sven Livesey whilst Steve Croton had prior engagements to attend.

Never the less Rob Cook, John Rickett and Paul Linder were keen on a ride and met up with Tim Newbery at Louth’s Leisure Centre. After some discussion, we’d stick to the published route with a visit to Applebys Ice Cream Parlour at Conisholme.

Starting off dressed in jackets and waterproofs, the rain soon eased and it warmed up sufficiently to disrobe by the time we reached Legbourne. The ride through the Carltons and Three Bridges to Saltfleet proved surprisingly pleasant and more unfamiliar as we usually approach from the reciprocal direction. Quiet however with for once a lack of birdsong and we didn’t spot any other cyclists. We did note that the Prussian Queen public house has re-opened, a hostelry once frequented by the club.

Passing through Skidbrooke with the disused St Botolph’s Church standing alone in the marshes, it wouldn’t be long before we arrived at Appelbys in Conisholme, the cloud having briefly broken up sufficiently to allow some glimpses of blue sky. Time for refreshment. We were surprised by the complimentary comments from some customers at our fortitude in cycling in the conditions.

On departure we emerged to steady rain necessitating waterproofs once more. No sign of a significant improvement at Fen Bridge so we took the option of forgoing the ‘Lincolnshire Wolds Railway Steam Day’ at Ludborough and instead decided to head back to Louth for a bite to eat at the Leisure Centre. We aim to visit the Heritage Railway later in the year as there are many more steam days planned.

Hot drinks and food were enjoyed at the Aqua Vita Health Bar whilst enjoying a friendly chat and with the time ticking by, emerged at about 1.30 pm to rain bouncing off the ground, rivulets flowing freely in the car park. Here’s hoping Paul and John returned home without getting soaked. A shortened 30 miles for the Louth Contingent.
