125 Years Old
Congratulations to Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire Member Groups who celebrate their 125th anniversary.
Following the decision to allow the formation of ‘District Associations’ in January 1897, at the monthly council meeting at the George Hotel, Shrewsbury held on Saturday 14 August 1897, the Cyclists’ Touring Club (CTC) Council resolved – “Item, 165 – That the council do hereby sanction the formation of a District Association for the County of Leicester. Item 166 - That the council do hereby sanction the formation of a District Association for the County of Nottingham”.

Subsequently, at a meeting held at the George Hotel, Haymarket, Leicester on Tuesday 14th September 1897, chaired by J Edwin Roper "Acting upon the sanction of the council granted at the Shrewsbury meeting" a resolution was unanimously passed forming a district association for the county of Leicester."
The official inaugural ride of the association was at 2.45pm on Saturday 18th September 1897 from Granville Road near to Victoria Park pavilion. They rode to Wistow Park via Glen Magna (now known as Great Glen) with tea at the Bath Hotel, Shearsby. The return was via Wigston and Oadby The first meeting of the committee was at the house of the Chief Consul in West Street, Southfields, when it was reported that the run to Wistow Park and Shearsby was much enjoyed, several ladies participating.

It was recorded in the December 1897 edition of the CTC Gazette, that "In accordance with the rules of the formation of District Associations, I hereby give notice that at the January Council Meeting application will be made for leave to form a District Association for the County of Nottingham".
