Holy Island
Event description
Nothing beats the mystical experience of crossing to Holy Island across the causeway at low tide alongside the pilgrims’ walk across the sand flats - "in the steps of Sst Cuthbert". Look out for the swans and the impressive sand dunes towering over the road as you reach the island.
The ride goes all the way to Holy island and back (across the causeway - well within the safe crossing times). Outbound route is via Bendor, Lowick and Kentstone. Return is via Kentstone, Black Heddon and Hetton North and then down the Devil's Causeway to Horton and onwards to Weetwood Bridge and Wooler.
There will be rest and catch-up stops as needed along the route. We will have a visit to the Routin Lynn prehistoric rock art, but no other visits on the outbound and return journeys other than the island itself.
Note that Lindisfarne Priory (English Heritage) and Lindisfarne Castle (National Trust) will be closed as a Covid-19 precaution.
Start is at the Wooler Milk Bar where breakfasts and coffees are available to boost your energy levels for the ride – served from the hatch while Covid-19 precautions are in force.
Lunches will be available from several cafes and pubs (also adopting Covid-19 precautions) on Holy Island or bring your own packed lunch if you prefer.
The ride is all on road. Distance: 40 Miles. Difficulty level is mostly moderate with some strenuous climbs.
Toilets: There are public toilets at Wooler and at the Green Lane car park on Holy Island. Toilets at pubs and cafes are generally for customers only but may not be open because of Covid-19.
Wooler Cycle Hub is an affiliated member of Cycling UK (membership number 90176686) and operates its guided rides in accordance with Cycling UK guidelines.
