Welsh elections 2021

Elections for the Welsh Parliament took place in May 2021, and Cycling UK campaigned to make sure candidates were aware that cycling for all is a vote winner

About the campaign

In the run-up to the Senedd election on 6 May 2021, Cycling UK’s bilingual Moving up the gears manifesto called on all candidates to commit to making Wales a place where cycling is for everyone by:

  • Investing  – spend the money on infrastructure and behaviour change
  • Delivering – make it happen, by creating high-quality cycle lanes and liveable neighbourhoods
  • Connecting across Wales – ensure communities are connected with each other and the countryside

We also compared the manifestos of the main political parties and arranged an active travel hustings, which revealed genuine cross-party support for active travel.

To show how much support there was for our manifesto’s vision, we launched an online, public petition targeted at candidates too.

One of the main points we wanted to impress on politicians was the need to enable more people to enjoy cycling in rural areas, not just for leisure but also for shopping and commuting. Hence our ‘The tale of the tortoise and the hare’ video, which focused on combining cycle with bus travel, a message to apply not just in Wales, but in England and Scotland too.
