Cycling UK's Going the Extra Mile awards scheme acknowledges the incredible contribution made by volunteers to our mission to enable millions more people to cycle

Cycling UK feels that volunteers deserve to be appreciated for their effort, energy and enthusiasm for cycling. If you know an outstanding volunteer, why not thank them by nominating them for one of our Going the Extra Mile awards?

Lifetime achievement awards

Certificates of Appreciation are sent to individuals or groups that have completed voluntary tasks with Cycling UK for a certain number of years and have been nominated for recognition:

  • 10+ years - Bronze award
  • 20+ years - Silver award
  • 30+ years - Gold award

These awards are usually given in person where possible and are accompanied by a personalised thank you card from our chief executive.

Lifetime Achievement Awards

This is a list of the exceptional volunteers for Cycling UK who have been awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for their long service and dedication to encouraging more people to cycle over many years, whether as committee members, campaigners or performing other roles. They have gone above and beyond to dedicate their lives to enable others to enjoy the wonderful benefits of cycling.

David Vine, CTC South West London Jul-24 for retiring at our AGM as club Chairman after 10 years of extremely enthusiastic, dedicated, effective and good humoured service including navigating our way through complex COVID restrictions.
Denis Holder, St Helens and Warrington CTC Jul-24 for being a retiring Treasurer and part-organiser of the Wild Wales Challenge for 39 years, retiring from both roles in April 2024.
Edwin Jones, W. Sussex CTC Jul-24 for retiring as the long serving DA Secretary and member of the Bognor Chichester group as a result of a cycling accident
Emrys Jones, Chester & N. Wales CTC/Caer a Gogledd Cymru CTC Jul-24 for being involved with CTC Cymru since it started and volunteering at the Welsh Festival of Cycling from the start and has been organiser for many years. He has also been a tour leader for CTC Holidays & Tours, and organised the Wild Wales Challenge one year.
John Holiday, Chester & N. Wales CTC/Caer a Gogledd Cymru CTC Jul-24 for being a volunteer at the Welsh Festival for over 10 years and has been involved with cycling for many, many years. He has led rides, helped with advice, booking in and looking after the site and club room when others are out on rides. He has had a lifelong passion for cycling and regularly volunteers for Bren Bikes and Sustrans. He has also worked as a cycle instructor.
Lowri Evans, Chester & N. Wales CTC/Caer a Gogledd Cymru CTC Jul-24 for being involved with the Welsh Festival of Cycling for many years and longtime secretary of Chester & N. Wales CTC/Caer a Gogledd Cymru CTC
Ray Clay, Cycling UK East Midlands Region Jul-24 for serving on the Cycling UK East Midlands Region Committee since its formation in 2000. He has served 24 years as a Committee Member, a long service indeed. He was also the instigator of the annual Beaumanor cycle camping weekend. At the age of 85, he has decided to take it a little easier and stood down from the committee at our AGM.

Certificates of Appreciation

Certificates of Appreciation are given to Cycling UK volunteers and groups who have truly Gone the Extra Mile for cycling and cyclists. They may have organised a sportive, co-ordinated a successful local campaign, shown exceptional dedication and commitment over several years, or won one of our annual volunteer awards. In 2020, we awarded Certificates of Appreciation to those who had gone above and beyond by showing Lockdown Love to others through cycling.

Brian Sidoli-Morris, Cycling UK Shropshire Jul-24 for being the main driver in rides organisation, leading rides, helping new ride leaders and running the club's website. His contributions are at such a high standard that after an eight- year gap, in 2023 Cycling UK Shropshire revived the old Ray Page Memorial Award and and awarded to Brian Sidoli-Morris
Sue Howell, CTC Cambridge Jul-24 for working to provide the catering for various club events and AGM. Others help, but Sue is the mainstay of the catering activity and makes it all happen for our members.
Nick Smart, Uxbridge Loiterers Jul-24 for taking a lead on adminstering first aid on a group ride. He later took it upon himself to undertake a first aid refresher course
Alan Cowking, CTC Grampian Jul-24 for leading a total of 29 rides in the year when one of our other most active leaders broke her wrist
Tom Hanley, Cycling UK Dumfries & Galloway Jul-24 for organising and supporting the rides
Roy Bishop, Cycling UK N. Birmingham Jul-24 for organising the Annual Audax for several years. He is organising his last Audax this year and will be a hard act to follow
