Melanie Abbott
Melanie Abbott's is a BBC Radio 4 journalist - working on You and Yours. She also presents Woman's Hour and File on Four. When she's not busy working she can be found out on her bike.
In May 2021 Melanie hosted a show on Woman's Hour called Breaking barriers to cycling for women. The programme tackled what stops women - particularly women of colour or who live with a disablity - from cycling.
Melanie Abbott said…
"I've always commuted to work in London as it seemed the best and easiest way of getting around the city. It did help me develop nerves of steel which perhaps stood me in good stead when I was introduced to mountain biking 20 years ago.
"Since then I have travelled all over the world in search of mountains to ride but still love my beloved Surrey Hills, which are almost on my doorstep.
"As a child I could never wheelie or do any of those flash things other kids did on their bikes. But slowly I've learnt how to do jumps (small ones) and grown in confidence riding over obstacles like drop offs and rock gardens.
...just being out in the countryside is wonderful therapy and an escape from normal life
Melanie Abbott
"Even if you don't fancy doing any rough stuff just being out in the countryside is wonderful therapy and an escape from normal life.
"I've met some amazing people and found some incredible trails thanks to my mountain bike. There's nothing better than switching off and enjoying the ride!"
