Chella Quint OBE
Chella Quint OBE
Award-winning author, educator, and founder of the Period Positive movement, Chella Quint OBE blends humour, art, and design to empower communities to improve their menstrual literacy. She has recently been listed in the Disability Power 100 list for 2024 and she was awarded an OBE in the King's Birthday Honours List 2024 for services to education and menstrual literacy.
A lifelong cyclist and passionate advocate for inclusion, she champions accommodation for nonstandard cycles and promotes cycling as an environmentally responsible way to maintain good physical health, mental health, and menstrual health. Based in Sheffield, Chella regularly borrows an e-trike from Sheffield Cycling4All, which has renewed her love of cycling after mobility challenges and a back and hip injury.
She uses her trike to sustainably commute to period education workshops around the city, participate in monthly mass rides with friends, and test cycling infrastructure to provide feedback to the council. Her efforts include advocating for wider lanes, removal of restrictive barriers, and improved trike-friendly train access.
Chella’s cycling journey began at the age of three, overcoming the challenges of dyspraxia to ride independently by eight. Moving to Sheffield with all of its hills proved challenging, but annual visits to Berlin with her period comedy show, Adventures in Menstruating, reignited her love of cycling and made her determined to cycle more in Sheffield before her injury.
Over the past five years, meeting the team from Cycling4All and finding out all about e-trikes inspired her to take part in events like Critical Mass, Dom Whiting’s Drum and Bass on the Bike, and even bike polo. She also supports Cycling4All by promoting their work online and acting as a ‘buddy’ for disabled cyclists, encouraging others to experience the joy and freedom of tricycling.
“Finding Cycling4All and their electric trike scheme made cycling accessible again, which has been so transformative for me, particularly during the pandemic. Riding around Sheffield and beyond - especially with friends - has been a joy, and I’d recommend cycling to everyone.”
